Does a 12-MHz resonator must be used to obtain a 48-MHz USB clock?

Latest Updated:06/20/2013

Question:

Am I correct in thinking that in order to obtain a 48-MHz USB clock, a 12-MHz resonator must be used?

Answer:

When using USB boot, either connect a 12-MHz resonator to the main clock oscillator, or input a 12-MHz external clock.
When not using USB boot, any clock that can generate a 48-MHz USB clock is fine. It does not necessarily have to be 12-MHz.
