How is the new Synergy S5D5 MCU Group positioned within the S5 series, and how does it compare to the other Synergy MCU Series – S7, S3, and S1?

Answer:

The S5D5 Group of MCUs is the second set of devices in the S5 Series, rounding out the series perfectly for applications that do not require the MCU to drive a graphic display panel directly, but still offering the performance, Flash & SRAM size required for advanced connectivity & security.

Synergy MCUs are designed to be scalable up or down to meet varying end-product requirements, enabling customers to leverage and reuse their investment in both hardware and software design. The S5D5 group scales upwards all the way to the high-performance S7 series, and is also scalable downwards to the Synergy S3 Series MCUs, having compatible peripherals and SSP compatibility.

What is special about MCUs in the S5D5 Group?

Answer:

MCUs from the S5D5 Group hits the sweet spot of performance, price, and features for applications that do not need native graphic capabilities. The MCUs bring functionality such as full-speed USB, on-chip Ethernet, robust capacitive touch sensing, high-resolution analog, & efficient calculation.

The large 384KB SRAM is ideal for situations where multiple tasks are running concurrently, and the fact that the SRAM size is consistent across all packages & Flash memory sizes configurations makes the S5D5 ideal for applications that require advanced communication protocols. In addition, the S5D5 MCU Group also features the same advanced security functionality as the superset S5D9 & S7G2 Group MCUs.

What are the special security features and capabilities in the S5D5 Group?

Answer:

S5D5 Group MCUs have several mechanisms to protect data, keys, and firmware in memory. These are critical requirements to establish a unique root-of-trust in each individual MCU device to begin a chain-of-trust that ensures the integrity and authenticity of its software throughout the life cycle of the MCU and the end-product – from manufacturing throughout deployment. Here are a few examples -

  • The Secure Memory Protection Unit (SMPU) is a hardware feature that locks memory from outside access such that only secure code can access that memory.  In addition, a Flash Access Window (FAW) is a hardware feature that allows for certain segments of memory to be written only once and never erased – good for storage of root keys, the secure boot loader, and secure flash update modules.
  • Secure boot, secure flash, and fail-safe flash programming modules are also locked via memory protection hardware.
  • Unique OEM and device keys are locked via memory protection hardware and are protected from being modified or read as needed.
  • Secure code runs in a secure partition protected by memory protection hardware.  Only secure code has access to secure data.
  • Secure code must be executed through a chain-of-trust that starts with booting from known, locked secure code.  (i.e. Secure functions can only be called from other secure functions).
  • NIST-compliance cryptographic algorithms using keys stored in the MCU’s secure memory without exposing those keys to unsecured code.
  • True Random Number Generator (TRNG) provides best-in-class secure generation of keys, secrets, and entropy for cryptographic protocols.

S5D5 Group MCUs have more functions than available I/O pins; how can they be sold in such small packages?

Answer:

The S5D5 group offers an extremely flexible pin multiplexing scheme and configuration tools help our customers to assign required functions to available pins. The pin configurator for our ISDEs, e2 studio and IAR Embedded Workbench for Synergy, help the hardware designer to check many configurations in minutes without reading hundreds of pages in the User Manual. S5D5 MCUs are available in 100LQFP, 144LQFP, and 145LGA packages.
