Is it okay to exceed on the recommended value of the external capacitor?

Latest Updated:02/01/2008

Question:

In the case of a microcontroller with an internal regulator, is it OK for the capacitance of the external capacitor to exceed the recommended value?

Answer:

No, a larger capacitance would cause a delay in the start of internal operation against the peripherals at the beginning of power activation, so that the operation cannot be guaranteed.
In the case of capacitors with a small capacitance or small ESR and ESL, it may make the movement unstable and oscillation may occur. Therefore, thorough evaluation and judgment of the capacitor to be used is required, considering the characteristics of the capacitor.

Remark
ESR: Equivalent Series Resistance
ESL: Equivalent Series Inductance (L)
