Data cannot be received in serial transfer. What caused it?

Latest Updated:04/01/2006

Question:

Data cannot be received in serial transfer. What are the probable causes?

Answer:

Has the receiving side been started up?
In clock synchronous serial communication, data does not start to be transmitted or received just when the mode is set.

Transmission naturally starts when data is written but reception also needs a startup trigger.
(In the case of reception only, an SIO read is required and in the case of transmit/receive mode, dummy data must be written.)
